This Northern Italian late 18th century commode features superlative marquetry and round inlaid medallions on each sides, with two different muses female bodies
in the front and top too.
Giuseppe Maggiolini (1738-1814) established his own workshop in Milan in 1758. In addition to serving the court of Milan, Maggiolini created pieces for other European royalty including the king of Poland, Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, the duchess of Austria, and Napoleon’s widow, Empress Maria Luisa.
This pair chest of drawers comes from an exclusive private Madrid house and shows many signs of its history of 250 years, see closed-up details, top showed slight curvatures, overall minor veneer losses and detachments.
It has been restored and polished with gommalacca shellac, it is now in good condition, consistent with age and use.
